From DC to London

Ramblings of the trials and tribulations of my life in London as an American ex-pat :)

The flat is mine!!!!!

I woke up today thinking I had a million things to do: get re-packed (quite a task at this point as I've actually had to crack into one of the winter clothes bags!), prep for the interview, get the rent money wired, sign the lease...so I'd set my alarm for 6AM. And when it went off this morning, it felt waaaay too early. I felt like death warmed over.

So right then and there, I decided to just stay at the hotel for 2 more days and deal with checking out and repacking and whatnot after the interview. I was definitely staying until tomorrow I figured, as it didn't seem likely that I'd know by noon that the flat was mine...but I was contemplating somehow moving tomorrow morning.

So suddenly, my day seemed much more empty and I went back to bed...waking up at nearly 9AM, I went downstairs and had a lazy breakfast and came back to the room to prep for the interview and answer a few emails.

Around noon, I'd gotten incredibly bored and realised that I can do whatever I want ;) So I took myself to Kensington Gardens and just reveled yet again in the fact that I live here. I got hopelessly lost on the way back and was gone for much longer than I should have been, but oh well.

So, after another bit of prepping, I went back out for a late lunch and basked in a bit more of the cool and sunny day (almost too cold for my short sleeves) at an Italian cafe across the street.

More prepping and my phone rang...I got the flat!!!!!!!!!!!!! So a quick email to, I thought, start the ball rolling on the wire transfer and I went off to treat myself to some gelato ;)

Coming back to the hotel though, there was no response from the bank manager :( I finally got impatient and called the branch (we'll see what that cost!) and it seems she was in training today. Ack. So I spend the afternoon fretting and trying to find an alternative solution, to no avail.

The money will have to wait until tomorrow, and I'll be in my interview most of the afternoon, so I'm not sure how it will all work out, but it will! I have high hopes that on Saturday, I'll have a lazy morning, I'll move to my flat and I'll spend the weekend checking out my new neighbourhood (Bayswater) :D I've already scoped it out via Google Maps...several pubs on my block ;) A walkable grocery store, 3 tube stations, it'll be fun :)

So that nervous breakdown curbed, I went off in search of dinner...lol and ended up getting a cheeseburger and fries ;) Some London chain that Zagat loved, so I figured why not...and it was yummy! Huge though, I'm feeling kind of gross right now.

I've also calmed down a bit on my finances, done some recrunching and while I'm excited about tomorrow's interview, I'm going to give myself a few days next week to relax and get organised before I jump back into any more interviews.

And once I get my tenancy agreement, I can get a bank account! Woohoo! Hard to believe that exactly a week ago at this very moment, I was standing in the doorway of my flat in DC, saying goodbye to it.

Congratulations on landing the flat! That's such a big hurdle to clear. The neighborhood sounds really nice, too.

Good luck with the job interviews!

Yippie! I now have somewhere to stay in London. ;-) Seriously though, I'm glad you will finally be able to get settled. I'd wish you luck on the interview, but considering that it is now around 5:15 or something there, I assume it's already over and will be looking forward to hearing about it with bated breath.
